Ransomware Attack on Dental Offices

Ransomware attack

May 9, 2024

The FBI sent out an alert to the ADA warning dental practices about a credible threat. Hackers are calling practices and pretending to be new patients and claiming that they are not able to fill out the forms online and would like to just email the forms to the practice. Of course, when the practice receives the forms, they are actually receiving malicious links and/or files that will result in ransomware.

The alert indicated that the target was predominantly OMS offices so far, but warned all dental practices that hackers may pivot to general and specialty offices as well.

Be sure to let all staff know to not open any emails with attachments, especially ones coming from new patients.  And of course, practices should review their training on spotting phishing email.
