IRS IP PINs

Identity Protection Pin (IP PIN)

The IRS IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned to taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security number (SSN) on fraudulent federal income tax returns. You are assigned an IP PIN when the IRS’s records show you were previously the victim of identity theft, or you were identified by the IRS as a possible victim of tax-related identity theft. However, any taxpayer with a SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is eligible to enroll in the IP PIN program.

A new IP PIN will be generated each year. If you are married, you and your spouse will each receive your own IP PIN, and they will be mailed to you separately. You MUST use your current IP PIN on any return filed during the current calendar year, as well as any delinquent tax returns you file that year. If you do not include your IP PIN on your tax return, or if you use an incorrect number, your return will be rejected.

From mid-December through early January “CP01A notices” (letters) were sent to taxpayers eligible to receive an IP PIN. If you opted in online to get an IP PIN, you will not receive a CP01A notice by mail; you must retrieve your IP PIN online beginning in early January every year.

By now, you should have your IP PIN notice. If you lost your notice or didn’t receive it, you can use your IRS Online Account to retrieve your current PIN: www.irs.gov/payments/online-account-for-individuals. If you are unable to get your PIN online, you can call the IRS at (800) 908-4490.

If PPG Partners prepares your individual tax return, be sure to provide you and your spouse’s IP PIN notices to us now or when you submit the rest of your tax documents.
